Heroes of Cricket

Taken from the archives of The Wisden Cricketer this is the first collection of writing on 3 of the most enigmatic heroes of cricket.

We begin our series with David Gower – Tiger Moth co-pilot, Bollinger-lover, heavenly timer of a cricket ball and, as detractors often forget, scorer of more Test runs than any Englishman when he was shoved out in 1992, after 117 brilliantly frustrating Test matches. Gower encapsulated two traits very dear to the English, effortless brilliance and human vulnerability.

The second part of our collection tells the story of how Viv Richards, an Antiguan choirboy, took on the world from under a woollen cap, becoming a potent symbol of Afro-Caribbean pride. He was his generation’s most watchable batsman – and its’ greatest.

No.3 in our heroes of cricket anthology is Shane Warne. Unrepeatable and brilliant,  Warne  perfected the leg spin - one of the trickiest techniques in sport outside pole-vaulting and made it look easy.

Available to download now, this anthology is exclusively brought to you by The Wisden Cricketer, the best-selling and most respected cricket magazine in the world.
